03/29/12 At 7am on Thursday morning, worked started on the installation of “Encore” a stainless steel and granite statue of jazz great Duke Ellington in front of the old Howard Theater. The 20-foot, 10,000-pound statue by sculptor Zachary Oxman depicts Ellington “upon a monumental treble clef inspired by his own handwritten musical scores while playing a piano whose keys swirl upward creating a vortex of melodic energy.”
