Rhinebeck Abuzz!

07/31/10 The historic hamlet of Rhinebeck, N.Y., was put back on the map, thanks to today’s wedding of Chelsea Clinton and Marc Mezvinsky .  The in(n) crowd stayed at the Beekman Arms, founded in 1766; George Washington slept here. Townspeople mixed with curious weekend visitors and the media horde outside places such as the Delamater Inn — all hoping for a glimpse of invited guests like Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen. Shop windows displayed congratulations to the newlyweds, who will tie the knot this evening at the Astor Courts estate on the Hudson River.

Legg Mason Official Draw

[Croatian Marin Cilic – who will be #4 Seed in 2010 Legg Mason Tennis Classic helps with putting the names in the bracket after they are drawn at random.]

07/30/10 Today was the Official Draw for the 42nd edition of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic which kicks off on Saturday, July 31 and runs through Sunday, August 8. Mayor Fenty presented a “Tennis Week” proclamation and VIP guests drew players’ names to complete the Main Draw Singles bracket for the tournament.

This year’s Legg Mason Tennis Classic features three Top 10 players   (www.leggmasontennisclassic.com), including Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych (No. 8 on the South African Airways ATP Singles Rankings); three-time Legg Mason Tennis Classic champion (2001, 2005 and 2007) World No. 9 Andy Roddick (USA), Fernando Verdasco (No. 10); Marin Cilic (No. 13); marathon man John Isner (No. 18), and Sam Querrey (No. 19).  Former champion James Blake (2002) will compete as a Wild Card recipient in the tournament, marking his first return since 2006.

[WTOP radio reporter Mark Plotkin cornered Mayor Fenty to persuade him to commit to being on his politics program next Friday.]

UPDATE! 08/05/10 The Mayor was a no-show for Plotkin’s program so Plotkin spent the first few minutes denouncing the Mayor as a “potted plant” for going to an event with President Obama instead of coming on his show.

4th of July at Clermont

07/04/10 I spent my 4th of July at Clermont, the Hudson River home of the Livingstons. It’s now a state park and is situated close to my family’s farm.

Patriot Robert Livingston was not only a signer but a member of the 5 man committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence. He was the negotiator of the Louisiana Purchase and he administered the 1st presidential oath of office to George Washington.

He was also a partner with inventor Robert Fulton in creating the first commercial steamboat, also called the Clermont, which stopped at the house on its maiden voyage.

In October 1777, a British raiding party came up the Hudson from occupied NYC and torched the house because of the family’s prominent role in the revolution.
