Hipstamatic

05/31/10 I’ve been playing around with a new camera app for the iPhone called Hipstamatic. It’s pretty cool – there are a couple lens selections and it mimics colors from print films as well as putting a white border around the square image.  It costs $1.99. iPhone is a great tool as long as you don’t need it as an actual phone. Here’s 3 pix from a Memorial Day weekend trip to Ryan Farm with some of my nieces and nephews.

May ’10 Open Studio Re-Cap

04/23/10 Thanks to everyone who came out to my Open Studio in Old Town Alexandria on Sunday! The shoot was made challenging by a broken air conditioner but thanks to makeup artist LaT everone looked great and I captured some amazing images. I’ll post a lot of them shortly but here’s a couple of the lovely Sarah to get the ball rolling:

Get Your Preak On! Scenes From The 135th Preakness Stakes

CLICK HERE FOR VIDEO OF THE RACE!

05/15/10 Another great Preakness Day. Turns out there will be no Triple Crown winner this year as the heavily favored Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver folded up like a lawn chair when it was time for him to hit the gas. He finished 8th.  The victory went to Lookin At Lucky ridden by 25 year old jockey Martin Garcia, who has never been in a Triple Crown race before.

Morning Workouts

05/14/10 It was a bit foggy at Pimlico racetrack in Baltimore early this morning for the workouts of the horses competing in tomorrow’s 135th running of the Preakness Stakes.

Champagne In The Toothpaste Aisle

05/05/10 Siobhan Catanzaro, of The Georgetowner newspaper, attends the Gala re-opening of the “Social” Safeway in Georgetown a year after it was completely re-built. The Gala included a jazz quartet and a DJ as well as bars and serving stations spread throughout the store.

From the press release:

“The new 71,067-square-foot Georgetown store will continue to promote the character and historic nature of its upper Georgetown neighborhood, maintaining the open, inviting atmosphere that resulted in people dubbing it the “Social” Safeway, but it goes much further:  it has been designed and built to be, if approved, the first LEED-certified grocery store in the District, and Safeway’s second LEED-certified store (the other being located in Santa Cruz, Calif.).”

Uncorrected Proof

05/05/10 Yesterday I shot a portrait session with my lovely – and soon to be massively famous – writer friend Helena Andrews in a new apartment without a stick of furniture in it. Her collection of autobiographical essays titled “Bitch Is The New Black” is due out in June and has already been optioned as a movie. “No you can’t have a copy!” was the first thing she said when I noticed this pile of copies sitting on her counter. I guess I’ll have to wait along with everyone else to read it.

You’ll have to trust me that the photos of Helena are amazing because I’m not going to post them just yet.  All I can say is, the movers who arrived after our shoot finished to fill up the apartment with Helena’s furniture must’ve been stunned at the glamorous lady who answered the door.

Thanks very much to the great makeup artist LaTonya Winters for doing a fantastic job as well as for coming out at the last minute.

Blast From The Past #2: ’08 White House Corro Din Din

05/01/10 I mentioned The Jonas Brothers in my previous post and it reminded me of an image I took at the Corro Dinner back in 2008. I got this photo by standing behind a crew from Entertainment Tonight as they ambushed the Jonas Bros with an advance copy of Annie Leibovitz’ provocative photo of  Miley Cyrus. I remember how shocked they looked before their handler hustled them away without saying anything . . .

Blast From The Past: ’98 White House Corro Din Din

05/01/10 Tonight’s the night for the annual White House Correspondent’s Dinner. If the past is prologue, it will surely be a bizarre scene – a weird mash up of Oscar Night and DC Rubber Chicken Ballroom. I’ve gone to a bunch of these and it never fails to entertain. The Hollywood types get to pretend people in Washington care about what they have to say on policy issues and the DC types get to squeal like schoolgirls over the Jonas Brothers. I remember a couple years ago everyone desperately wanted to get their photo taken with Sanjaya from American Idol. Is he still around?

This used to be your usual boring dinner until the famed (and sadly departed) Michael Kelly of The Atlantic Monthly (then a booker for one of the morning TV shows) added an element of celebrity and scandal to the staid affair by inviting Iran Contra figure Fawn Hall to the dinner in 1987 and Donna Rice (Gary Hart’s ‘Monkey Business’ shipmate) the following year. It hasn’t been the same since. News organizations compete to get the most popular or oddest celebs they can.

[Paula Jones attends the 1998 White House Correspondent's Dinner as a guest of Insight Magazine. The occasion marked the first time she and President Clinton were in the same room since the hotel room in Arkansas where she said he sexually harassed her.

A  cibachrome print of this image shown under the title, "The Devil In Ms. Jones" was a prize winner in the group show "Marches, Marble & Events"  held by The Washington Center for Photography in March of 1999.]
